Configuration Manager
ITIL, quite an interesting title. Well I think there is room for a
little discussion on what could be the Roles and Responsibilities
for this outstanding individual. Below is a list of the things that
immediately come to mind and are a starting point. When you sit down
and start identifying what you would want from this individual, you
will probably identify around 50 more!
Configuration Manager
ITIL – What should he/she do?
The very first thing
is to identify the objectives of organization’s Configuration
Management policy and standards. The second would be to evaluate
existing Configuration Management systems.
Configuration Manager
ITIL – Scope the process
This person needs to
propos and agree to the scope of the Configuration Management
processes, function, the items that are to be controlled, and the
information that is to be recorded. Develops Configuration
Management standards, Configuration Management plans and procedures.
Configuration Manager
ITIL – Conduct of the awareness campaign for Configuration
Management
He/she needs to mount
an awareness campaign to win support for new Configuration
Management procedures. Also to ensure that changes to the
Configuration Management methods and processes are properly approved
and communicated to staff before being implemented. As well as plan,
publicize and oversee implementation of new Configuration Management
systems.
Configuration Manager
ITIL – Staff
Arrange recruitment
and training of staff. Train Configuration Management specialists
and other staff in Configuration Management principles, processes
and procedures.
Configuration Manager
ITIL – Evaluate tools
Evaluate proprietary
Configuration Management tools and recommend those that best meet
the organization’s needs.
Configuration Manager
ITIL – Overall Plan
Create and manage the
Configuration Management plan, principles and processes and their
implementation. This includes CI registration procedures; access
controls and privileges. Ensures that the correct roles and
responsibilities are defined in the Configuration Management plans
and procedures.
Configuration Manager
ITIL – Manage the CMDB
Use or provide the
CMDB to facilitate impact assessment for RFCs and to ensure that
implemented Changes are as authorized. Create Change records,
configuration baselines, and package Release records in order to
specify the effect on CIs of an authorized Change. Ensure any
changes to Change authorization records are themselves subject to
Change Management procedures. Ensure that the CMDB is updated when a
Change is implemented.
Provide the CMDB to
help identify other CIs affected by a fault that is affecting a CI.
Performs configuration
audits to check that the physical IT inventory is consistent with
the CMDB and initiates any necessary corrective action. Plan and
execute population of the CMDB. Manage and maintain CMDB, central
libraries, tools, common codes and data. Ensure regular housekeeping
of the CMDB.
